The Problem:

Our original concrete was poured
during a freeze and the cream
froze causing it to crumble over
the years. It was full of little pot
holes and difficult to clean.

A local company gave a bid of over
$10,000.00 to repair the concrete
last year and OPR just didn't have
the funding.

It seemed bleak that we would be
able to repair this problem anytime
soon as there were so many other
priority needs such as unexpected
high veterinary bills last year, extra
propane to heat the monkey areas
during extremely cold weather,
bedding, food, and ongoing repairs.
The Cure:

With generous funding from Jean
Barr & The Douglas & Gloria
Rumberger Foundation, we were
able to resurface & seal the
concrete floors in the macaque
building! Not only is the
resurfaced area easier on the
monkeys feet, it's impervious to
moisture so really controls the
odor and takes half the time to
clean!

The product we used for this
project also closed the gap
between the bottom of the walls
and the floors, making it
seamless which make things
much more sanitary!

And we were able to save
thousands because Skip & Polly
did all the labor!
With funding we were able to remodel the entire macaque barn,
replacing damaged Hardy Plank walls with FRP board. FRP is
impervious to moisture and cannot be destroyed by the monkeys
as long as every single seam is covered with heavy aluminum
strips.
Monkeys had great fun chewing and picking at the
hardy plank around the guillotine doors and picking
holes in the hardy plank walls. We were constantly
repairing the damage
The company who originally poured our concrete
used wood around the outside of the pour area which
soaked up urine and was difficult to clean. Exposed
wood should never be used in a monkey enclosure
with the exception of tree branches for enrichment
that can easily be replaced.
(Photo taken before the monkeys colorful enrichment toys added)
Our full spectrum lighting bounces off the stark white walls and really
makes things bright and cheery for our resident monkeys during the dreary
winter months. Our new seamless, wood free enclosures are so much
easier to clean, and smell so fresh!
